Three Day Weekend for Connecticut?

Pyrrhuloxia

There is some uncertainty, but it is looking good (or bad if you don't want to be in school on June 30) that a big storm will hit on Monday, February 2.

I'm sitting in that mass of damp Mexican air right now, with several inches of rain having fallen so far in Hereford, Arizona.  Then I will be flying home to get home in time for it to hit Connecticut.

Roadrunner
There is a question about the exact track and whether the big storm will hit Connecticut, but warnings have already been issued so that the towns can push snow back from the roads.

My Guess for the Next Week

What snow?  I can't see any snow from here!
Just a guess, but I think that tonight's snow will not impact school in central to western Connecticut.  The snow Sunday night might cause a late opening on Monday, but I will update this before then.

As for next Wednesday, that one could be interesting.  I know that you teachers in WeHa love your meetings, so I will update that one as we get closer.

Early warning for Tuesday 1/27/2015

It is too early to be certain, but it looks like Next Tuesday will have all schools closed.

As of now I am predicting a late opening on Wednesday, unless the high winds with the coming storm take down power lines.

Of course all this is still 3 days away, so don't hold your breath.  But....

Climate Change Has Not Stopped. Sorry, Conspiracy Theorists.

For those People Who Didn't Pay Attention in Science Class who have been drooling because they were told that the Earth is cooling off, not warming up.....   Those people who think that thousands of scientists world-wide have been falsifying data for over 50 years, while a plucky bunch of petroleum billionaires are bringing us the truth...
2010 Eruption in Iceland shut down air traffic in Europe for over a week.

Yes, recently the atmosphere has not been warming as much as before.  The cause is an increase in volcanic eruptions.  Volcanoes pump material into the air that block incoming solar radiation.

My students might remember that there were several questions on quizzes, tests, and the final exam about the effect of volcanoes on the atmosphere.

Prediction for WeHa Schools Monday 1/12/15 -Updated

Sunday morning prediction for7 am Monday 1/12/15
The air might be warm enough for rain Monday morning, but the ground will be frozen = freezing rain, the most dangerous precipitation.

Despite the low amounts of liquid predicted, the freezing rain during most of the day could result in closings.

Of course the administration doesn't like to keep schools open late in June while paying non-teaching staff for a snow day.  And you really don't want to lose a day of review just before exams.

So prepare for class, but I am right now giving 85% chance of school closings in the Hartford River Valley, with 90% in the Farmington Valley and 95% in the hills.

Students, prepare for school but watch the news.  Teachers, be prepared.  If schools are open, teachers should expect an unpleasant drive in and a miserable drive home.

Stay Warm on Thursday 1/8!!

Tomorrow's trip to school in Connecticut will dangerous.  With wind chill temperatures below 0 degrees F, your skin can freeze solid in minutes.  Dress warmly!

It looks like most schools will be opening late.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015 Early Prediction for WeHa.

Still 4 days away, but as of now it looks like the Tuesday snowstorm will begin in the afternoon.  No early dismissal seen for the Hartford River Valley schools, just miserable driving conditions for the afternoon.

Updates later.
